A year after holding that school's first racially integrated prom, Taylor County High School in rural Georgia has returned to its segregationist ways and will be holding two proms again- one for white students and one for all students. I suppose in a way that's a tiny bit better than one for whites and one for blacks.
According to some, a small number of white students wanted to have a whites-only prom and influenced a number of other students to accept the idea.
Now to most of us the notion of segregated proms seems weird enough on its own, but add to that this comment from the Associated Press: " Until then, parents and students organized separate proms for whites and blacks after school officials stopped sponsoring dances, in part because they wanted to avoid problems arising from interracial dating."
Problems arising from interracial dating? Which problems are those exactly? In my experience with interracial dating, the only problem I had was adjusting to trying foods I'd have never otherwise considered. Perhaps the "problem" they're talking about is the "problem" of having to open up minds to different cultures and ideas? Frankly, I don't think of that as a "problem" but rather a great opportunity to expand one's horizons (though I'm still refusing to sic gai gerk).
Or perhaps the "problem" is one external to those who are dating-- specifically hostility directed at the dating by the bigots who think it isn't right (and can probably produce some arcane bible quote to justify their bigotry).
Some students plan to attend both proms but many students find themselves torn between partying with two groups of friends... one inclusive, and one exclusive.
Were I faced with such a decision, I think I'd decide that anyone who would attend a segregationist prom was no friend of mine.
