I couldn't help but be reminded of the tale of Arthur Allen and his Atlanta church which became obsessed with beating children when I read about a pastor and his brother beating a child so severely that his kidneys failed and he had to receive a blood transfusion.

Why would they do such a thing? Was the child an immediate threat to their wellbeing? Did the child have a gun or a knife? Was the child brandishing weapons of mass destruction?

No, I'm afraid the child was misbehaving during sunday school. That means the child had the devil in him, and it was up to pastor Joshua Thompson and his brother, Caleb to beat the devil back out of the boy, Louie Guerrero, for over an hour.

First you take a bunch of uneducated fundamentalists and then you take the concept of an inerrant bible that is to be interpretted literally, then you have it read by the ignorant and uneducated yahoo and then you have certain verses which are brainwashed into the fundy from birth, such as the concept of Original Sin and verses which say that you are guilty of sin even while you are forming in your mother's womb and that you are born in sin. Then you have the cultural instruction that children must be 'broken' as in have all of their self-will 'broken', as in the concept that a child (who is naturally ego driven) needs to have 'original sin' i.e.satan beaten out of him and every act of minor disobediance including just responding with the word 'no' is in soe how demonically driven, then the good fundy parent hears that bullshit spare the rod nonsense and they are thus performing the will of th almighty fucking sky daddy by beating the skit outa the kid.

By the way 'spare the rod' does not mean 'rod' as in a weapon or object to inflict punishment, rod in the hebrew sense meant 'authority' and it meant that if you do not teach you child to respect authority (not brutality either) he will as an adult have a hard time regulating his life.

But ask the average fundy what it means and he will say it has something to do with 'if you do not inflict corporal punishment on a kid with a stick or belt you'll end up with a bad kid'

Utter bullshit!

Send those motherfuckers to jail.

For all you pro-spankers on the board, think about this fact: Even in cases of non-abuse this can happen just because of were the kidneys are located. If you take a look at adult bondage sites most make mention of this in safety articles. So if you are going to spank learn to spank safely.

Hmm. Methinks there is child endangerment afoot. Someone ought remind this "Man of the Cloth" that there is a line between discipline and child abuse. Spanking a disobedient child until he is hospitalized spells not only abuse but ENDANGEMENT TO A MINOR which leads to PRISON TERM! Someone should take this moron and shove him into a cell and let this guy know what it feels like to be beaten shitless.

It can happen anywhere. Over the summer, here in Milwaukee, a "preacher" sat on a young boy during some sort of ceremony designed to "get the Devil out of him". The boy, who I believe was borderline retarded, suffocated. I'll have to check the local archives to find out what happened to him. I wonder if the "Devil" survived.

The really funny thing about the "spare the rod and spoil the child" mantra is that it isn't even Biblical, although there's a passage in Proverbs that resembles it.

The original is from Samuel Butler's Hudibras and runs:

Love is a boy by poets styl'd So spare the rod and spoil the child.

Butler wasn't talking about childrearing or discipline; he was talking about getting a wee bit kinky in the boudoir.

Of course, and awful lot of the fundy personality seems to be based on sadism...
