I'm sure that a great many morons.org readers have seen this letter, purportedly to Dr. Laura Schlessinger, that is a satirical refutation of using ancient Levitical law to condemn homosexuality today. The myth-busting website Snopes, seeing a resurgence of the letter in the wake of recent progress towards gay marriage, has posted some background information on the letter, Dr. Laura, and what they could dig up on the history and origins of the letter.

The letter itself is brilliantly crafted. While it doesn't address all the Biblical "clobber passages" used by the Religious Right to condemn homosexuals, it absolutely dismantles the use of Leviticus. (For the others, check out this examination of them by the Rev. Dr. Walter Wink.) The Dr. Laura letter also calls into question the whole idea of applying four-thousand-year-old sexual practices and prohibitions to today's society.

If you've seen the letter before, you'll probably enjoy the background on it that Snopes has posted. If you've never seen it before, you need to read it, regardless of your stance on homosexuality. Enjoy!
