The same day the Bush campaign released an ad complaining that liberals are negative and pessimistic while associating them with Adolf Hitler, Vice President Dick Cheney got a little angry and negative himself on the floor of the Senate.

Cheney, as the Vice President, is also the president of the Senate and so he was present for a routine photo shoot. (The Senate was not in session during the shoot.) It was there that Cheney bumped into Senator Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT), a ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. The two began to argue with Cheney criticizing Leahy for his remarks about Halliburton's war profiteering and that company's ties to Cheney (Cheney was formerly the CEO of Haliburton). Leahy fired back something about Republicans accusing Democrats of being anti-Catholic for opposing some of Bush's judicial nominees.

In other words, it was a bit of a cat fight between opposing politicians.

The argument erupted with Cheney, the traditional family values virtuous Vice President telling Leahy, "go fuck yourself!" Leahy spokesman David Carle said of the outburst, "The vice president seemed to be taking personally the criticism that Senator Leahy and others have leveled against Halliburton's sole-source contracts in Iraq."

I certainly can't fault the man for saying the word "fuck" since I use it frequently myself. I even launched into a stream of shouting the word during AIDS/Lifecycle this year as I was descending a hill inside Vandenburg Air Force Base after a bee stung me. On that occasion I yelled, "fuck! fuck! fuck! fuck! FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!" Those were my exact words. So no, I won't fault the man for saying "fuck."

Instead, as usual, it's the hypocrisy, stupid. The administration is lashing out at Democrats calling them "negative." White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. has previously criticized John Kerry for using the same word. Republicans in general often rant and rave about foul language in the media. Well-known Republican Bill O'Reilly said of Al Franken using the same word, "there's something wrong with this guy!" The right wing pretends it has some kind of exclusive lock on virtue and purity, but in reality, they like to shout "fuck" just as much as the rest of us.

So it's not so much that the man said "go fuck yourself" to a Senator. It's that Cheney's party and the Bush/Cheney administration try to present themselves as the righteous keepers of piety when in reality, they're no better than anybody else.

Cheney reminds me of some unsavory character from an old horror film. He's rarely seen in broad daylight, reportedly has a secret underground lair, he looks like death-warmed over and when he DOES make an appearance before the public, everyone ends up wishing he'd stayed in his cave...

I think this is so funny. Cheney went "Big Time" here, didn't he? I think this is very hilarious, especially after the stink raised over Kerry f bomb in Rolling Stone, and that was used to describe a policy, not telling someone to go and try it!!

I do have to say something though.

What is up with the liberal media? I mean really. All of a sudden it seems like the media has finally picked up the ball. Once I heard that Bush had talked to feds about the Plame leak and hired a lawyer, I did not expect to hear about it, but it was the first story on my Good Morning America show this morning, and at the little informal segment at the end, they talked about the cookie contest, and they even said "sadly" it looks the Bush will win. I am amazed.

I'm waiting for the usual response of at least one idiot to this article. Where is it? Come on, let it out, you know you want to.

Maybe it'll be something incoherent like, "man can't defend himself for anything, homonazis. I think I'll stay with the good guys" (evidence of not being able to read).

Or even better, "why is the media spending so much time on the F-word when they should be showing AMERICANS getting their heads cut off" (evidence of a FOX complex), or "with all that is happening in Iraq with our brave soldiers being killed, you communists are watching Michael Moron's movie and making a big deal about one little word Cheney said. This site sure is well named" (evidence of extremely low IQ and lack of originality).

Personally, when brought to serial usage of the F word by pain, irritation or Swiss referees not giving a perfectly good goal in the last minute of extra time in a European Cup quarter final, I find finishing with 'Fuckety Fuck' works best, those extra two syllables round the phrase off and stop it just trailing into nothing.....

On NPR during my drive home this evening, Cheney was completely unapologetic. "It needed to be said."

The double standard - I mean, they just a few weeks back took Kerry to task for daring to utter a curse word - astounds me.

The part that pleases me is that every local radio news outlet (NPR, WTOP, the television stations) is reporting this and some are even pointing out, as I heard on WTOP that "apparently Bush and Cheney are no longer interested in 'civility' during this election season."

Yo, Mr. Cheney? Go fuck yourself.

what I find funny is that while I was doing a Google News search for this topic, I found more stories about the Washington Post spelling out the word fuck in it's coverage of the story and the Post's defense of that decision.

Back in the old days, the founding fathers would sometime challenge each other to duels, so it's not such a big deal when one says the f-word.

Why this is such a big deal, however, is when such words come from one who puts himself up as the epitome of Christian decorum and piety.

It's the hypocrisy, stupid.
