Vice President Cheney yesterday told supporters, "It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States."

No comment yet from the White House as to why Cheney has suddenly become a Kerry supporter. Sure, he didn't mean the comment that way, but it's amusing to take it in that context. Cheney meant this as a scare tactic: if you don't vote for the current regime, the bogeyman will get you!

This sort of nonsense is, of course, unsupportable, misleading, and worst of all, incomplete. If we make the right choice, the same danger still remains. I hate to say this, but no matter who we elect, no matter what precautions we take, no matter how many days we spend living in fear, no matter how much duct tape and plastic sheeting we buy, the United States will be attacked by terrorists again. It is inevitable, moreso when our foreign policy seems dictated by schoolyard bullies.

Kerry's running mate John Edwards lashed out at Cheney, saying "Dick Cheney's scare tactics crossed the line today, showing once again that he and George Bush will do anything and say anything to save their jobs. Protecting America from vicious terrorists is not a Democratic or Republican issue and Dick Cheney and George Bush should know that. John Kerry and I will keep America safe, and we will not divide the American people to do it."

I have to agree. What issue could be more non-partisan than protecting Americans from violent attacks? Frankly, I find Cheney's scare tactics insulting to my intelligence, and you should too. Does he really think we're so stupid that we can be threatened into voting for his ticket?

Let's spin it another way....

In 1993, there was an attack on the World Trade Center. This happened under Clinton's watch. Fortunately, there was a minor loss of life and some property damage. There was not another terrorist attack until 2001 - Bush's watch.

Perhaps a vote for Bush back in 2000 was a precursor to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Perhaps if Gore and the remaining Clinton administration had remained in office, then the terrorists may have held back. Perhaps they saw the election of Bush/Cheney as the weakness they'd been looking to exploit. PERHAPS...

When it comes down to the scare tactics that the current administration uses, they're only supported by a lot of 'maybes', 'mights' and 'what ifs'.

I don't think the idea was to "threaten" people into voing for the Republicans, but rather to go for idea of "We are the ones that will protect you" concept to pitch as a sound bite. As such it will sound good to a great many people who tend to gobble up such things.

This website, like most other news sources of the VP's quote, has MISQUOTED the V.P. Listen to the audio of the VP's remarks again. Cheney did NOT say, "... then the danger is that we'll get hit again"; Cheney instead said, "... AND the danger is that we'll get hit again..." Listen carefully. One word changes the meaning of the quote completely.

Cheney was not saying that voting for Kerrey-Edwards would result in terrorists attacks within the U.S. while voting for Bush-Cheney would prevent such attacks; Cheney was saying that such attacks are most probably inevitable whoever is in office (Bush or Kerrey), but that Bush would have a much better response to such an attack because Bush would treat such attacks in the context of war rather than Kerrey's tendency of treating them as criminal violations to be investigated and prosecuted within the procedural limits of civil/criminal courts.

Please, friends, listen CAREFULLY to what people say before jumping down their throats.

It's funny when our so-called leaders of the Bush Administration bring out this drivel and anti-Democrat finger-pointing while standing on their soap boxes in self-appointed glory. Thus, they forget about the fact that September 11th and the anonymous Anthrax attacks(the worst we've seen by far) happened right under their noses on their watch! If one were wise or intelligent which this presidency is not, one would use millions of dollars to fix the flaws of Homeland Security not use it for a mudslinging campaign.

unfortunately he is right! we make it a national policy to intrude daily in the internal affairs of sovereign nations and make new enemies weekly. once we realize that we are not the savior to the world, and stop shoving our national nose in their business, we will be safer.
