South Africa joins the growing list of countries with greater support for the civil rights of gays than the United States (aka Land of the Free). Their Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled in favor of a lesbian couple, changing the common-law definition of a marriage from a "union between a man and a woman" to a "union between two persons".
Jerry Falwell lied through his teeth on Meet the Press, claiming that when he blamed the 9/11 attacks on gays and abortion rights advocates he also accused "a sleeping church, a lethargic church." His claim is demonstrably false.
The Scottsdale Unified School District has settled a lawsuit brought against it because it refused to allow a summer camp operator to send home flyers with religious overtones. The district did allow other outside organizations to send home flyers. You may recall that we supported equal access for the camp on this site.
The American "Family" Association is urging a boycott of yet another company. This time they want people to boycott Target for refusing to allow Salvation Army bell ringers outside their doors. Target does not allow any solicitors on its property. There are now approximately 11 companies left in the United States against which the AFA does not urge a boycott.
The 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that universities may deny access to military recruiters without fear of losing their funding. Some colleges have denied access to recruiters to protest the military's exclusion of gays. In 1994 representative Gerald Solomon (R-NY) sponsored an amendment to a defense spending bill that instigated the threat to college funding. The court wrote, "The Solomon Amendment requires law schools to express a message that is incompatible with their educational objectives, and no compelling governmental interest has been shown to deny this freedom."
