You might remember Pat Robertson from predictions for 2005 like "the American stock market is going to surge upward" and outragous claims like gays, abortion and the ACLU brought about the terrorist attacks in September of 2001, that abortion and divorce are the fault of gay people that God hates the Supreme Court and will bring his wrath upon America and most recently that the people of Dover, Pennsylvania would suffer God's wrath for voting out members of the school board who had instituted a policy that the "intelligent design" non-theory should be taught along with evolution theory in science classes.

Well he's opened his mouth again, and again something stupid fell out. Now he's claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's recent stroke was punishment from God. On his 700 Club program, Robertson said, "He was dividing God's land, and I would say, 'Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the [European Union], the United Nations or the United States of America... God considers this land to be his. You read the Bible and he says 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.'"

So according to Pat, God smote Sharon because Sharon withdrew from Gaza (presumably because God is love and infinitely forgiving).

The White House has gone on record repudiating Robertson's remarks, saying "those comments are wholly inappropriate and offensive and really don't have a place in this or any other debate."

Robertson probably doesn't actually believe this nonsense; instead, he's playing the religious-right game of trolling for press. It's truly mind boggling how he can say things like this with a straight face. Chalk it up to years of practice. One thing is certain: his fervent followers will eat it up.

I'm not sure that his "Holieness" is on the same planet anymore. First he and Fallwell blame the 9/11 suicide attacks the works of Gays, Liberals, Abortion doctors, etc, yada, yada,. Then he said God will destroy Dover, PA for rejecting creationism! Now this bullshit! What ever kind of God or diety Robertson worships is in the same boat with Al Qeada, the John Brich Society and the Ku Klux Klan. "If the White House and the Bush Administration calls your opinions/remarks "inappropriate and offensive" then it's time to do the world a favor and SHUT YOUR TRAP!!!!"

And here I thought that, as the Creator, the God of Abraham had a priori rights to all that is. I don't remember hearing of any clause against subletting in the rental agreement (which I haven't signed, anyway).

This is just more babble by Robertson. A 5'7", 250+lb pound man in the latter years of his life having a stroke or heart attack or a sudden case of death means he's in the latter years of his life, not that he's offended the God of the bible. That God is supposed to be vastly flashier in his signs of disapproval, from pillars of salt to rivers of blood to city walls tumbling at a single horn's blast. A stroke feels so... mundane compared to biblical examples of Godly wrath.

Pat Robertson is largely responsible for shaping the Republican party since 1988. His candidacy that year forced the party to move its official plank decidedly in the direction of the views of far-right Christians. His Christian Coalition and its aggressive use of tax-exempt money greatly impacted Presidential and Congressional elections from that time forward.

Although he's definitely goofy and even offensive, we should all be concerned about what he says because of his substantial influence over the party in power in the U.S. government.

Jon Stewart had it right: maybe the real cause of the stroke had to do with Sharon being overweight, overstressed, and over-the-hill. Maybe, just maybe, those played a bigger part than God's wrath.

Problem with people of faith, they never look for the scienfitically explainable causes when some supernatural act of God can be substituted!

What makes this even sadder is that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seems to agree, except this particular nut, unlike Robertson, is a president of a nation, a nation who wants nuclear weapons.

Honestly I am kind of torn on if he should get any more media attention.

I realize he is an utter idiot, and complete attention whore. So that is a good reason to ignore him.

But also, I think it would do wonders to give him all kinds of attention, and make people think he represents the right more than he does. It would hopefully alienate people from evengelical christianity. Having him as their figure head cant really help them, so maybe we should encourage him to make himself out as the leader of evangelical christians.
