Gonzo Gone!
As I'm sure you've all heard by now, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has announced his resignation, effective September 17th. After 8 months spent under a cloud of scandal, something finally prompted him to do the right thing and resign. What was it? I don't know. It wasn't honor or self-respect, that's for sure. If he had either of those things the Justice Department wouldn't be in its current mess. The administration is trying hard to make it seem like this was Alberto Gonzales's idea rather than him being run out of town, but that's a transparent ploy to retain some respectability for a man who deserves no respect whatsoever.
So I don't know what it was that finally made Gonzales quit. It wasn't Congress. They're out of town at the moment. It wasn't public opinion. The public has hated him for months. I can only imagine that there is something coming down the pipe that will bring his wrongdoing and/or incompetence into such sharp relief, that not even Bush's undying support could protect him. And no one will be surprised. Good riddance to you, Alberto Gonzales. Never come back.
Naughty Boy!
Today Roll Call learned that Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), who is up for reelection next year, pled guilty back in June to a charge of disorderly conduct. The conduct involved? Soliciting a police officer for sex (gay sex!) in a public restroom. Obviously, Senator Craig supported the Federal Marriage Amendment last year. After all, what is a Republican sex scandal without some good old-fashioned hypocrisy?
Credit Where Credit's Due
As a final note, I want to give major credit to Joshua Micah Marshall and the rest of the crowd over at Talking Points Memo for Gonzales's resignation. TPM is almost singlehandedly responsible for bringing the US Attorney scandal to light, and their constant reporting and hard work on the story is, if not the proximate cause, ultimately at the root of Gonzales's downfall. Congratulations guys, you've brought down the worst Attorney General in US history. You've done your country a great service.
UPDATE: Above I stated Sen. Craig pled guilty in June. That is incorrect. He was arrested in June and pled guilty just this month.
