Iran
First the bad news. Yesterday, the Senate voted on an amendment to the Defense Authorization sponsored by Joe Lieberman (CFL-CT) and John Kyl (R-AZ) to declare the Iran Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. The vote was 76 in favor to 22 against. The only conceivable purpose of this resolution is to lay the groundwork for an eventual war with Iran, so the fact that 29 Democrats voted for it (including Hillary Clinton) is completely preposterous. At least some of the most incendiary language was stripped from it. The bill used to say it should be US policy to use all aspects of US power to prevent Iran or its proxies from interfering in Iraq.
S-CHIP
Now onto good news. After the House passed S-CHIP by a vote of 265-159, the Senate took it up today and passed it 69-30. Congress has thus approved a reauthorization and expansion of a program which provides health care to millions of children. It's now up to President Bush to decide whether those children will have that health care or if they will go without. Unfortunately, while the Senate passed S-CHIP with a veto-proof majority, the bill was 24 votes short in the House.
Hate Crime Legislation
The Senate also joined the House today in passing legislation which includes homosexuals as a protected class for purposes of hate crime prosecutions. This bill, also known as the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, was approved by a vote of 60-39. Hilariously enough, "wide-stanced" Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) actually had the gall to vote against it.
