Posted by libc on Nov. 24, 2008 06:57Several years ago, there was a discussion on this forum about how George Wuerch, the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska, banned a gay pride exhibit from an Anchorage public library. The library had a policy of allowing any group to put up a display in a designated area for a designated time period. When some people complained about a gay pride display, the mayor quickly ordered the exhibit removed from the library. There was a court proceeding, and eventually, the courts ordered the mayor to live up to his duty to protect free speech and reinstate the exhibit.
Shortly thereafter, Mark Begich ran against Wuerch for the position of mayor and defeated him in a very close election. It's the same Begich, of course, who is now set to become Alaska's new senator.
