It's nothing new that the fundies have been going after Harry Potter, over and over again. We know their story: blah blah witchcraft blah blah satanism blah blah.

But now apparently the fundies are so livid over the popularity of the Harry Potter movie that they've made a fatal slip: They've moved beyond expressing what could be considered mere "opinion" and let their true agenda show.

"There's something wonderful about childhood fantasy and that's something you really don't want to take away from children but at the same time when witchcraft is put in a favorable light that's of concern," says Rev. David Anderson. Says Lindy Beam of Focus on the Family of the magic in the book, "any curiosity raised on this front presents a danger that the world will satisfy it with falsehood before the church or the family can satisfy it with truth."

What do these two comments have in common? They are not saying the story does any direct objective damage to children. What they are saying is that the movie presents kids with a view of the world that differs from Christianity, and that this is inherently bad. They feel no further explanation is necessary.

So the fundies have just tipped their hands here. They're not really trying to protect children from harm. They're trying to protect children from exposure to experiences which might detract from their own brainwashing job.

Thanks to the fundies for taking a step toward proving what we've long suspected.
